Burnout: More than just 'being tired' – And how to find your way back

In our demanding society, it seems as if we always have to be 'on'. The pressure to perform, both at home and at work, can be enormous. But what happens when that pressure persists for too long and your energy reserves are completely depleted? Then burnout may be lurking. Burnout is much more than just 'being tired'; it is a state of deep physical and mental exhaustion that can affect your entire life.

What exactly is a burn-out?

Burnout is not a medical diagnosis in the traditional sense, but it is increasingly recognized as a serious condition. It is caused by prolonged stress without sufficient recovery time. Your body and mind are constantly under high tension, causing your energy reserves to literally run out. It is as if your battery is not only empty but also no longer recharges.

Signals of burn-out?

The symptoms of burnout often creep in gradually, meaning you might not even recognize them at first. Some common signs are:

  • Extreme fatigue: This is not the fatigue you shake off after a good night's sleep. You feel constantly exhausted, as if you have lead in your limbs.

  • Emotional exhaustion: You are more irritable than usual, cry more easily, or conversely feel numb and apathetic.

  • Detachment: You withdraw from social contact, feel cynical about your work or hobbies, and have difficulty with empathy.

  • Concentration problems: You have difficulty focusing, struggle to make decisions, and forget things more easily.

  • Physical complaints: Headaches, muscle tension, gastrointestinal problems, sleep problems, a weakened immune system; your body is sending clear signals.

  • Reduced performance: You feel that you are no longer doing your work well, make mistakes, and have less self-confidence.

The way back to a balanced life

The good news is: recovery from burnout is possible. It requires time, patience, and often professional guidance, but it is not a permanent condition. The first step is acknowledging that you need help and that you are not alone. At 'A Balanced Life', we focus on an integrated approach to burnout recovery, looking at both the physical and the emotional and mental aspects. Techniques such as EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) and Brainspotting can be extremely valuable in this regard:

  • EFT helps you reduce the emotional charge of stress, anxiety, and frustration. By gently tapping on specific points on your body, you can regulate tension in your nervous system and find inner peace.

  • Brainspotting can be used to process deeper-seated stress and traumas that have contributed to your burnout in a gentle and effective way. It helps you lift emotional blockages and increase your resilience.

It is a journey in which you learn to guard your boundaries, identify stressors, and develop healthy coping mechanisms. You learn to listen to the signals of your body and mind again, and thus find balance in your life.
